New MapQuest Adds More Features

Mapping news - Thu, 07/22/2010 - 16:11

If you’ve read our blog recently, you’ll know that we launched a New MapQuest site just a few weeks ago. We’ve gotten some great feedback already – including suggestions on how we can make it even better. We’ve taken this feedback and made some changes. Here’s the most noteworthy:

Full Map View
You asked us for more map and now we have it! With the recent update, you can now collapse the left pane to view a map that’s as wide as your browser window. This is a great option for those of you that are visual and like to see as much map as possible.

Full Map View of MapQuest Map

Zoom via Mouse Scroll
Another common request was the ability to zoom the map via your mouse and now you can! In other words, next time you’re on MapQuest, hover your mouse over the map and use the scroll wheel of the mouse to zoom in or out. We like to think of the map as your canvas so it’s great to hear that so many of you want to interact with it!

In addition to these enhancements, we also made some other minor changes to features based on your feedback and fixed a few errors reported by you as well. As I hope you can see, we really are listening and hope you’ll continue to give us feedback! We want to hear what you like and what you think we can do better.

For those of you that haven’t checked out the new site yet, I hope you take a second to give it a spin. It’s available now at new.mapquest.com.

MapQuest Live Traffic – More Coverage!

Mapping news - Tue, 07/20/2010 - 14:00

If you visit MapQuest frequently, you’re likely to be familiar with our real-time traffic feature, which helps with trip planning by showing traffic congestion using familiar green-yellow-red overlays as well as traffic incident and road construction details. Well, we have great news for you: we’ve just dramatically expanded our road congestion (or “flow”) coverage, to over a quarter-million miles of roadways throughout major cities in North America. Best of all, we now include key arterials and city streets, enabling the MapQuest community to view traffic conditions on important cross-town routes which might also serve as good alternates to major highways.

MapQuest Live Traffic Expanded Coverage

This is all made possible by the new SpeedWavesTM technology developed by our traffic partner INRIX, which factors in the impact of stoplights and stop signs on traffic flow to provide a more realistic and reliable view of traffic conditions along secondary roads. This approach provides higher accuracy than competitors who may interpret vehicles starting and stopping for traffic lights and stop signs on these roads as traffic jams instead of the normal flow of traffic through these intersections.

MapQuest Live Traffic Button

So if you’re already a fan of MapQuest Traffic, enjoy the expanded coverage! If you haven’t tried it, now is a great time to take us for a test drive as you check out all the other great new features at new.mapquest.com. To view traffic, just click on the “Live Traffic” button along the top of your map and zoom in to see our expanded coverage – or, zoom out to see which cities are covered.

So before you head home from work or take the kids to that cross-town soccer game, go to MapQuest and check out our new and improved Live Traffic!

MapQuest Opens Up

Mapping news - Fri, 07/09/2010 - 11:24

MapQuest Open LogoAOL’s MapQuest announced today, at the 4th annual international State of the Map 2010 conference, their plan to be the first major mapping site to embrace and encourage open source mapping at scale. As part of this initiative, MapQuest just launched their first site that is completely powered by open source data from OpenStreetMap.org!

This new project – open.mapquest.co.uk – was developed using the new MapQuest.com design but using data provided by the OpenStreetMap community. The main difference between this new site and our existing MapQuest UK site is that the mapping and routing data was created, edited and enhanced by every day people like you. OpenStreetMap was designed to give the local community the ability to update areas (roads, parks, hiking trails, bike paths, points of interest, etc) that they know in their own neighborhood and around the world, ultimately leading to what we believe will be the best and most accurate mapping experience for all.

AOL also announced today, a $1 million open-source mapping investment fund. This fund will support the growth of open-source mapping in the United States in the local communities that Patch.com covers. More information about the AOL grant application process is available by emailing osm@mapquest.com.

OpenStreetMap of Manhattan Beach on Patch.com

Patch, AOL’s rapidly growing community-specific news and information website and MapQuest’s sister company, already uses OpenStreetMap data to power all their maps. For example, you can surf on over to manhattanbeach.patch.com and view maps like these (image on left) as well as local community news and information.

Want to know why mappers around the world like to use OpenStreetMap’s free data? Click here to find out more about the differences between “free beer” vs. “free speech” in the world of mapping.

Ready to get involved? There is a wealth of information at the OpenStreetMap wiki about how to start helping out in your community. We’ll also be connecting during local mapping parties (known as meet-ups) in the Denver, CO and Lancaster, PA areas – stay tuned for more information on dates/places/times. Come on out and support your local maps!

Check out our latest MapQuest Dev Blog, written by Antony Pegg, to find out all the technical buttery goodness details about our new open.mapquest.co.uk site!

MapQuest 4 Mobile iPhone Adds Spoken Street Names and Supports iOS 4

Mapping news - Tue, 07/06/2010 - 16:37

MapQuest 4 Mobile Adds Spoken Street Names

Last week we announced the new MapQuest.com and today we’ve got some big news for mobile: MapQuest 4 Mobile iPhone version 2.0 debuts! We listened to all your feedback and now this new version speaks street names aloud, re-routes automatically, and runs in the background with iOS 4 making FREE navigation easier.

Spoken Street Names keeps concentration on the task at hand while providing the most critical information needed in an easy-to-understand medium: the street name of where to turn, spoken in a friendly voice (e.g. ‘Turn Left on York Street.’).

Auto Re-Route eases the stress of a missed turn, by automatically recalculating the way to the destination. In other words, no interaction with the device is necessary.

Compatibility with iOS 4 allows MapQuest 4 Mobile iPhone to organize the myriad of purposes afforded by fast application switching and background GPS (via iOS 4) by continuing Voice Guidance & Spoken Street Names whether on a call, listening to iPod, or saving battery with the application hidden.

MapQuest 4 Mobile iPhone New App Icon

The App Icon is also new. To reflect our new MapQuest brand, you’ll now look for the green and white icon to launch the MapQuest app.

Who needs in-car or paid navigation when one can carry it in their pocket, for free?

Redesigning MapQuest – It’s all about the Journey

Mapping news - Tue, 06/29/2010 - 10:55

When we started MapQuest, it was built on the simple idea of helping people get directions to their destinations. Nearly 15 years later, we remain committed to that core premise of providing accurate maps and directions to millions of people every day. And just as the Internet has evolved as a platform for discovering information and connecting us to it and each other, we are evolving to make it easier for you to find local information about places, to simply create your trip or journey and conveniently enable you to personalize and share your map with others.

Today, I am excited to announce that we are launching a new user experience on MapQuest and updating our brand to reflect our new direction. We thoughtfully redesigned MapQuest.com to be more helpful, intuitive and engaging where the entire experience is within view and contextually relevant throughout. As the map has become a canvas for conveying local information about what’s there, nearby and along the way, our focus is to make it easy to discover and get directions to those places, whether you are an everyday commuter or an adventurous explorer.

MapQuest Primary LogoOur new brand identity resonates with our core value of helping people find places. The Quest in our name evokes a spirit of inquiry and exploration, whether it is a trip down the street or a journey across the country. Like the new site, the updated brand is simple, clean and modern. We also introduced a new icon that can mean different things to different people. No matter what it means to you, we hope that the user experience helps you more easily navigate your world – Whatever your Quest, MapQuest.

One of the most obvious changes you will notice in the redesign is the one box search. Whether you are looking for a specific address, browsing for a local restaurant, or trying to find the little league park, you can enter as much information as you know and we will help you locate it. Another great feature is the map toolbar which allows you to easily search the map for brands, categories and places in a single click.

My Maps, another new feature, allows you to quickly personalize, save and share using a simplified login that leverages existing social services. So you can login using your account information from services like Facebook®, Twitter and Google®. The idea is simple: you can create a collection of your favorite places, journal your vacation or create an itinerary and then share it with family and friends. We also now provide you with the ability to further personalize your trips with notes, anecdotes and comments about each place along the way. In a world where social and local are the new frontier, we are focused on building a place where human experiences and individuality are paramount.

We have also integrated local information from a number of key AOL properties. The new MapQuest now features rich, quality content from Patch regarding the places in the community. Looking for a good steakhouse restaurant in Beverly Hills? On the new MapQuest, we not only show you the detailed content for restaurants from the Beverly Hills Patch, we also have integrated with OpenTable to make reservations right from the site. You can also search for hotels and we will now connect you to AOL Travel to book your hotel. As we move forward, you’ll continue to see us integrate relevant local content that helps you plan your trip.

With this release, we’ve made several great improvements in our routing capabilities, enhancing the directions narrative with helpful hints like ‘Your destination is just past 6th St NW’ and HOV lane day and time restrictions. We also continue to make significant strides in our mobile web and client applications, leveraging the intrinsic local nature of mobile and creating seamless experiences among web, mobile and other devices. In particular, our MQ4M iPhone application continues to lead our advance. As smart phones continue to proliferate, we are very optimistic about the opportunities to have MapQuest always with you.

As a key part of the overall AOL Local strategy, the MapQuest.com re-launch today represents our commitment to the consumer experience; one that inspires and instigates discovery, provides you with accurate maps and directions, and allows you to personalize and share your trips and journeys. We look forward to your feedback.

Are we there yet? MapQuest Vacation Summer Survey

Mapping news - Tue, 06/22/2010 - 16:53

This is it - the last post in our summer vacation series. We hope that the tips we provided on driving, planning and taking a summer vacation have been helpful. We are going to wrap up this series with some additional statistics from our survey of nearly 1900 individuals.

It appears that cost and experience/adventure are the main reasons that people are driving more this year than in 2009. The experience/adventure is probably one of the reasons that people are also choosing to travel with others. Only 4% are driving alone to a summer vacation destination and nearly half of our respondents will be driving with a spouse/significant other this summer. And, a lot of you will be traveling with children under the age of 18.

Not surprisingly, 54% of those traveling in a recreational vehicle are traveling 900 miles or greater this summer. When considering all vehicles, driving seems to be split fairly equally between those driving shorter distances (100 - 500 miles) and those driving longer distances (900 - 1200 miles). No matter if you are driving 100 miles or 1200 or greater, our suggestions on car games and other ideas from the last post should be helpful. However, once the games end and the food is gone, music will help everyone keep up the excitement of reaching the destination. Here are some road trip song suggestions.

In addition to these suggestions, there are tools that can help make sure you reach your destination more easily, like our own MapQuest 4 Mobile. A free application, MapQuest 4 Mobile gives you access to everything you can get on MapQuest.com but on your phone. In addition to the voice guidance feature, MapQuest 4 Mobile on the iPhone also has a "find me" feature that uses GPS to automatically locate you within your driving directions.

There are so many smart phone apps these days that we thought we would also suggest some that will help with other portions of the drive or your overall vacation. We also have also included some additional must haves for both the drive and the actual vacation:

o. 9 iPhone apps for your summer vacation
o. The recently released iBook for iPhone & iPod Touch
o. 2010 summer reading list
o. Summer gear for all destinations

Since we are talking about smart phone applications, including our own MapQuest 4 Mobile, we want to make sure you avoid using all of these apps while driving. Before heading out for your trip, take a look at the cell phone laws of the states along your driving route. Here's a handy chart of driving cell phone laws by state. However, even if it's legal to talk on a cell phone where you're going, it can't hurt to take advantage of your phone's hands-free option.

We hope that you enjoy your summer and we'd love to see photos of your trips! You can post summer vacation photos to our Facebook page over the course of the summer and we will make sure to hold on to them so we can look back again when there is snow on the ground.

Are we there yet? MapQuest Summer Survey

Mapping news - Fri, 06/18/2010 - 21:40

This is it – the last post in our summer vacation series. We hope that the tips we provided on driving, planning and taking a summer vacation have been informative. We are going to wrap up this series with some additional statistics from our survey of nearly 1900 individuals.

While it appears that cost and experience/adventure are reasons that people are driving more this year than in 2009, people are also sharing the experience with others. Only 4% are driving alone to a summer vacation destination and nearly half of our respondents will be driving with a spouse/significant other this summer. We suggested some car games and ideas for traveling with kids in the last post, so we thought that once the games end and the food is gone, music will help everyone keep up the excitement of reaching the destination. Here are some road trip song suggestions.

No matter if you are driving 100 miles or 1200 or greater, there are tools that can help make sure you reach your destination more easily.

Our own MapQuest 4 Mobile free application provides you with the ability to access any saved maps and directions from MapQuest.com to your phone. In addition to the voice guidance feature, it also has a “find me” feature that uses GPS to automatically locate you within your driving directions.

There are so many apps these days that we thought we would also suggest some that will help with other portions of the drive or your overall vacation. We have also included some overall must haves for both the drive and the actual vacation:

Finally, since we are talking about smart phone applications, including our own MapQuest 4 Mobile and even though the majority of you are not traveling alone, we want to be sure to point out that all of these apps should be used by passengers or when pulled over on the side of the road. Make sure you know the laws along your route concerning cell phone use while driving. Here’s a handy chart of cell phone laws by state. However, even if it’s legal to talk on a cell phone where you’re going, it’s usually safest to use a hands-free device.

We hope that you enjoy your summer and we’d like to see photos of your trips. You can post summer vacation photos to our Facebook page over the course of the summer and we will make sure to hold on to them so we can look back again when there is snow on the ground.

Make a List and Check it Twice: Summer Trip Planning

Mapping news - Thu, 06/17/2010 - 21:16
Summer Trip Planning Tips from MapQuest

This is the second in a three part series based on our online survey asking people what their vacation and driving plans are for summer travel this year. The survey was completed by nearly 1900 individuals ranging in age from 17 to 60 and older. The first post in this series shared tips on summer travel and driving to your destination.

Today, we want to talk about summer road trip planning – with 84% of our survey respondents considering driving when they plan a summer vacation, we figured trip planning would be a good topic of discussion.

Not surprisingly, more than half of the respondents use an online mapping site to plan their route for their summer vacation. However, only 8% use a road assistance/trip planning company and 17% still use an atlas.

We see the compelling reasons to use an online mapping site for planning, particularly because you can map critical points along the route you plan on taking. In our survey it was clear that people were planning ahead when driving. And, gas and hotels were the top choices for the most important things to plan ahead for before getting in the car.

The Experience/Adventure of It All:
In our survey, experience/adventure was one of the top three reasons people were choosing to drive for summer vacations this year (28% of respondents). If you are looking for some added adventure, map out roadside attractions and oddities ahead of time. RoadsideAmerica.com is a good resource to make the planning easy and fun.

With 17 – 35 year olds choosing to plan for places to eat second to cost, here are some good resources for planning what, where and when to stop for food:
Road Food
Healthy Eating on the Road
Diners, Drive Ins and Dives

Now that the gas stops, hotels, roadside attractions and food are all taken care of and planned ahead, here is a list of other things to consider as you plan the drive for your summer vacation:
Plan and learn the geology along the way
Beware of scams
Car games & ideas for kids

Tune in for our next post that will be the last in our summer vacation survey series and will give some stats on how far people are driving, who they share their ride with, as well as some ideas on how to make the most of the actual drive.

Stop by our Facebook page and let us know what your travel plans are this summer!

MapQuest Partners with HP

Mapping news - Wed, 06/09/2010 - 19:49

Hey Folks – we are off partnering again. This time we have partnered with HP® so that you can create MapQuest maps and directions or do a local search right from your printer!

Yesterday HP announced a major new initiative and a slew of new devices that enable users to utilize MapQuest and other helpful tools directly from the new HP web-enabled printers. These new printers access the Internet and allow you to quickly and simply get a map or directions or search for things like restaurants, gas stations and other business using the HP printer’s TouchSmart screen.

Here’s a quick preview of what the MapQuest app looks like on the HP web-enabled printer screen:

Get a MapQuest map, directions or do a local search from the web-enabled HP printers.

Check it out and let us know if you have any questions or suggestions!
